A different way of navigating: which power boat is the most energy-efficient?
An increasing issue in recent years, energy efficiency is also a current concern for boaters: both beginner and experienced sailors feel the need to compromise between comfort, autonomy and low fuel consumption, both for environmental reasons and to save money.
So, whether at sea or on a river, along the Atlantic or Mediterranean coasts, with a combustion or electric engine - which energy-efficient power boat should you choose?
In this article, the Delphia Yachts team gives you some advice.
Energy-efficient power boat: overview
A powerboat with low running costs
As a rule, a fuel-efficient power boat is one with low fuel consumption: a motorised boat that allows you to navigate without spending too much, particularly on fuel.
But fuel saving is not only possible with a specific type of fuel-efficient engine: other criteria must be taken into account.
Factors affecting a boat’s energy consumption
In reality, whether the boat is powered by an electric or combustion engine, the technical and ergonomic decisions made by the shipyard determine whether or not it is a cost-effective boat.
There are a number of factors that can reduce or increase a boat's consumption and energy efficiency, including:
- The type of engine (diesel, gasoline, electric) and its power output.
- The shape of the hull.
- The boat's light weight.
- The boat's dead weight.
- The energy-efficient cruising speed.
- The operation or use of the boat.
- The frequency and quality of maintenance.
- …
To navigate in a cost-efficient way, each of these factors is important.
Three Delphia models for cost-effective navigation
Delphia 10: ease of use, accessibility and compactness
The Delphia 10 is an energy-efficient powerboat with an overall length of 10 metres, designed for enjoying river or coastal cruising without compromise.
Available with either a combustion engine or an electric motor, the boat is compact but spacious: it is designed for those looking for an easy to manoeuvre boat, for cruises lasting from a few hours to several days.
Thanks to its optimised cruising speed, comfortable range and energy-efficient engine, the Delphia 10 is an excellent choice for boaters who want to reduce costs without compromising their navigation experience.
Delphia 11: well-being and sobriety
Renowned as one of the most energy-efficient boats, the Delphia 11 stands out for its excellent range and exceptionally low consumption, whether powered by a combustion engine or an electric motor.
With its 9.99-metre hull length, the boat can carry up to 400 litres of fuel, enabling it to travel over 1,600 kilometres at a cruising speed of 8 km/h. The electric version has a range of over 228 kilometres with a fully charged battery (76 kWh).
The Delphia team has carefully designed the space in order to create a very comfortable living environment for owners and passengers.
Delphia 12 : cost savings, autonomy and a high level of comfort
The Delphia 12, the flagship model of the range, is available exclusively in the diesel version. Equipped with modern engines compatible with HVO bio-fuels, it embodies a more responsible approach to boating, while offering comfort and autonomy for stress-free cruising.
With its 12-metre length and 600 litre fuel capacity, it offers an excellent range for inland or coastal cruises with full comfort, just like at home.
Optimised living space on board Delphia boats
The Delphia 10, 11 and 12 offer outstanding living space. Designed to optimise every inch of space, they stand out for their interiors, more generous than for most boats of a similar size, with:
- A cockpit designed for outdoor living.
- Comfortable and modular cabins.
- Smooth flow of movement, even at sea.
The living conditions on board are ideal, even during long trips.
Electric and combustion: two types of motorisation to reduce costs with Delphia models
Delphia boats with electric motors: quiet emission-free operations
Among the cost-effective powerboats, the Delphia 10 and Delphia 11 can be equipped with an electric motor. In this format, they provide their owners with emission-free peaceful outings, with no impact on the environment.
But electric power is not the only viable option for cost-effective navigation. The Delphia 10, 11 and 12, equipped with optimised diesel engines, also offer excellent power efficiency.
Delphia diesel boats: a low-consumption motorisation
Every choice we make at Delphia is inspired by the intended use. The combustion-engine models are therefore, equipped with perfectly sized diesel engines, which offer reliable performance, good autonomy and excellent energy efficiency.
Every diesel model is a fuel-efficient, cost-effective boat. The average fuel consumption is around 2 to 3 litres per 100 kilometres in everyday use, which is significantly lower than that of most boats equipped with a gasoline engine.
The diesel-powered Delphia boats are all a credible alternative to electric models: whether for a short daytrip along the coast or a month-long cruise on the inland waterways, owners can enjoy a maximum cruising range with minimal fuel consumption, for navigation within their budget.
Speed is a key factor regarding fuel consumption and environmental impact
Our boats are designed for enjoying navigation at a controlled speed: on board the Delphia 11 and Delphia 12, for example, the optimal speed is between 6 and 8 knots.
In addition to low fuel consumption, crews enjoy smooth, peaceful journeys that allow them to reconnect with nature. Navigating more slowly also has a reduced environmental impact, as it avoids disturbing local wildlife and minimises the churning up of the seabed. With Delphia boats, sailors can enjoy a sustainable lifestyle without compromising their independence or the pleasure of navigating.
For our brand, there is only one goal: allowing you to enjoy the scenery and interaction on board, while profiting from the moment!
A boat that is energy-efficient, thanks to optimal maintenance
Inflatable boats, RIBs, open boats, day cruisers, powered catamarans or trawlers - to navigate efficiently and reduce the operating costs of all types of boats, it is also important to ensure they are regularly maintained. Simple factors can make all the difference: a boat’s fuel consumption depends, for example, on the smoothness of the hull, the upkeep of the engine and the cleanliness of the propeller.
This is one of the reasons why our boats were designed to facilitate maintenance, extend the service life of the equipment, and optimise long-term performance.
Lower maintenance costs, easier management, no technical complications… The simple and intuitive design of Delphia boats limits the risk of errors and reduces stress for the crew.
Every model is accessible, even for less experienced boaters: it is also a vector of sustainability!
Beyond the economy, greater autonomy, comfort and time
Finally, when you choose the best fuel-efficient power boat, bear in mind that savings are not just budget-related when filling up at the fuel dock.
In other words, a fuel-efficient boat is also:
- Fewer fuel stops means saving time.
- Less noise and unpleasant odours mean a more comfortable cruising experience.
- Less stress during navigation means greater efficiency, independence and freedom of movement
- …
No matter which model you choose, with a Delphia powerboat, you will stay within your budget, enjoy your sailing trips, and savour every moment to the full!
